Wijn of Water – Shipping Container Restaurant Rotterdam

In 2005 the shipping container restaurant Wijn of Water (Wine or Water) in the Lloyd-quarter in Rotterdam opened its doors. The restaurant was constructed from recycled shipping containers. The building was always going to be a temporary structure, as the restaurant is now housed in the Sint Jobsveem warehouse, about 250 meters away. As a temporary structure, there was of course a limited budget.

The architect Caroline Mugwor’s brief was to design a temporary, fast build, inexpensive restaurant with summer terrace for about 50 people. The building blocks were nine second hand 40 feet containers, measuring 12,2 meters and making a section of 2,5 x 2,9 meters. The restaurant project was completed from sketch plans to opening in 6 months.  The project came in at € 165,000.
